How to decide when to regain blog page rank

February 12, 2008

How to decide when is the right time to regain your blog page rank or how to get Google to award your blog with page rank ? This is a simple question with answer that will determine your blog future.

So what if Google is a big bully

First, everyone will agreed that Google is currently the number one search engine. Google decides when to bring traffic to your blog or to your site. This is especially important if your blog is a start-up or in the process of gaining exposure.

Google use their proprietary page rank algorithm to determine the authority of a blog or a site. Google favor those blogs with page ranking and the higher the ranking is the more visible is the site on Google search page. Unranked blogs would be buried deep in their search page and may not see the light of day.

Google: Paid link is sinful

For those bloggers who earn extra income from posting paid reviews, Google page rank is giving them plenty of hassles. First, Google disfavor blogs that have paid links. Secondly, to differentiate the link, the blogger need to implement a "NOFOLLOW" tag for those sponsored links. Thirdly, most advertisers insisted that the link to their promotion page must have a "DOFOLLOW" tag.

Money or ranking

Now, it has become an "egg first or the chicken first" riddle. This means, the bloggers cannot have both worlds of being given a page rank and allowed to give away paid links. To Google, a blogger must take side. Meaning, do away with paid links and be awarded with page rank OR do away with page rank and get paid for posting paid links but being shunned by Google.

If you are just into blogging and thinking of earning easy money from paid reviews, you will be standing on two boats and each boat is moving in the opposite directions.

Living in two worlds

So, is there any possible way to make the two boats moving in the same directions ? Being a human, greed is natural to our way of living. We want both worlds regardless of the consequences.

In a small way, yes, you can in fact have both worlds provided that the advertisers is not particularly picky. Indeed there are still advertisers who are looking for promotion buzz by buying traffics from other sites rather than buying links.

Be picky, don't beg from advertisers

To be very basic, follow what is acceptable to Google. That is no paid link from your blog. If you do a paid review, make sure the link is implement with a "nofollow" tag. This mean, you have to make a big decision that can affect your earning. You will be forced to only accept review job that allow "nofollow" link and reject advertisers who required a "dofollow" link to their promotional page.

Small earning now, big success later

Following the above suggestion mean your earning from paid reviews will be drastically reduced but you will regain your page rank. This is critical for long term success of your blog.

In the long run, when you have done a sound footing for your blog with good exposure you can then decide if you still want to stick with Google. By that time, traffic to your blog will not only originated from Google but from different sources including your loyal readers or followers.

That is why A-List blogger like JohnChow.com is not overly concerned about a drop in his blog page rank. Even if Google slapped his blog with page rank zero, JohnChow.com will still be hit with thousand of traffic every day because he have established his blog and now have a large based of followers.

Prioritize your blog plan

So until you blog is categorize as a A-List blog, you do need Google to give your blog some page ranking. And until you have that page rank, keeping churning out quality post. Money, for the time being have to take a back seat.
